The Instrument

Fluid Flutes is a performed flute library covering six flutes — bass and alto flutes, flute ensemble, and the mid and high registers all the way up through the piccolo range. It runs on CC-Sampler, a custom plugin that installs directly in your DAW without requiring Kontakt or any other sample player.

Samples were recorded and assembled as continuous musical performances rather than isolated single hits. Each sample preserves 250 milliseconds of the performance before the rhythmic peak — the connection between one note and the next, as it was played. All samples are aligned to their rhythmic peak.

Why It's Called “Fluid”

The Sample Start control sets how much of the recorded performance you hear before the rhythmic peak. At 0ms you get the instant attack. Move it left toward -250ms and you get the attack plus the connection into the note as it was actually played. That preserved transition is what makes the library sit well in ostinatos and rhythmic passages.

Locking it to your DAW grid

Because the samples are aligned to a consistent rhythmic peak, the Sample Start value is also the exact track delay you need. Fluid Flutes ships at -60ms, so set your track delay in your DAW to -60ms, quantize normally, and the notes line up with the rest of your libraries — no adjusting the negative delay by ear. Move Sample Start and the number to dial in stays just as simple: whatever it reads, that's your track delay.


Microphone Channels

4 independent mic channels with individual volume and on/off controls:

Mic channels and Mix presets are mutually exclusive. Activating a mix preset deactivates all mic channels, and vice versa. Default state: Realistic mix.


Mix Presets

Two ready-to-use mix presets, each a full 648-sample channel of its own:

  • Realistic: Natural, balanced orchestral sound. Suitable for scoring, orchestral mockups, and acoustic-focused productions.
  • Hybrid: Modern, processed sound with added saturation and presence, for dense cinematic and trailer arrangements.

The four individual mic channels remain available for composers who want full mixing control.

Dynamic Layer Control

Fluid Flutes has three dynamic layers. Dynamic Layer Control gives you four separate ways to shape how they respond to your playing:

  • 1. Range (Zone Boundaries): Draggable split points that set where each dynamic layer activates across the velocity range. Set them so you sit mostly in dynamics 1 and 2, and have to hit noticeably harder to reach the third.
  • 2. Velocity Curve: Interactive graph with three modes — Linear, Shelf, and Fixed — to reshape how your keyboard velocity maps to the instrument.
  • 3. Per-Layer Volume: Independent volume offset for each dynamic layer (-12 to +6 dB). This is pure volume, on top of the layer change. Lower layer 1 and raise layer 3 and you widen the effective dynamic range — useful for accentuating marcato accents.
  • 4. Crossfade: Controls the overlap between adjacent layers. At zero, layers switch hard with no fade. Higher values crossfade the transition.

Transitions between layers use equal-power crossfading, so there are no volume dips or bumps at the crossover point. All settings can be saved as presets.


Performance Controls

  • Sample Start (-250ms to 0ms — default -60ms): How much of the recorded performance before the rhythmic peak you hear. At 0ms, the instant attack. At -250ms, the full natural approach into the note. Two modes: Live snaps to 0ms for latency-free real-time recording. DAW recalls a saved position for playback with the full natural attack.
  • Sample Start Offset (-60ms to +60ms): Fine-tune the start position in 1ms increments for precise alignment when composing in a DAW.
  • Tightness (0.1x – 10.0x): Pitch-independent time-stretching via WSOLA (Window-Synchronized Overlap-Add). Plays each note back faster or slower without changing its pitch — works on single notes and on sequencer pulses. At default (1.0x) the engine is bypassed entirely with zero CPU overhead.
  • Attack (0 – 4000ms — default 2ms): Shapes the onset of each note. Cutting the attack so notes start at the rhythmic peak while keeping the natural decay produces a hybrid, synth-like character.
  • Release (0 – 4000ms — default 2100ms): Controls the fade after key release. Shortening it is useful in ostinatos, where you don't need the full note length. Pushed to an extreme it gives an aggressive, synthy tail.

Convolution Reverb

True stereo convolution reverb with two presets. “Immersive” is the wider, more enveloping of the two. A common approach is more reverb with the chordal trills active, and a cleaner setting for ostinatos and regular notes.

Chordal Trills Engine (Pro)

Switch on Chordal Trills, play a chord, and the flutes generate a cloud of sound — trills moving between the notes you are holding on the keyboard. It works across the range, including down in the low register of the patch and spread across two octaves.

  • Trill Speed: Sets how fast the trill moves — slower for a broader shimmer, faster for a tighter flutter. Adjust to find where it sits naturally in your arrangement.
  • Trill Dynamics: The trill responds to the dynamic layers, so it can be shaped the same way the rest of the instrument is.
  • Second Engine: Adds a second layer of the same effect on top, doubling the density of the cloud.

Full transparency: these are not recorded trills. The engine emulates the effect of a trill. A separately recorded true trill patch may sound more realistic, but it means loading another patch or another library and a bigger template. This is a switch inside the same instrument.


Sequencer / Arpeggiator (Pro)

A built-in step sequencer that turns held notes and chords into rhythmic flute patterns in real time — the pulses and ostinatos that let flutes drive a cue rather than double one.

  • Activation: Sustain pedal (CC64) arms the sequencer. Notes played while the pedal is held trigger the active pattern. Latch mode available for toggle operation.
  • Start Modes: Immediate (on the note), Next Beat (quantized to the next quarter note), or Next Bar (quantized to the next bar boundary).
  • Chord Detection: Real-time chord identification via lookup table (26 chord templates, handles all inversions). Single notes, intervals and full chords are all recognised.
  • Humanize (0–100%): Applies timing jitter (±5% of step duration) and velocity variation (±10 around target) for natural feel.
  • Pattern Editor: Full visual step editor. Draw velocities, toggle accents and adjust step length. Create your own patterns and save them to the list under a name you'll remember.
  • Octave Doubling: Mark points in the pattern where the engine triggers an additional note one or two octaves below, for extra low-end weight. Velocity offset adjustable (-10 to +20).
  • Dynamics: Pattern dynamics follow your Dynamic Layer Control settings, so you can decide how dynamic the pulse is and pull a layer down if it's sitting too loud.
  • Keyswitch Switching: Assign patterns to MIDI notes and switch between them mid-performance without stopping playback.
  • Tempo Sync: Follows your DAW tempo, or runs on an internal clock.
  • Sample Start Override: Sequencer notes automatically use the full -250ms sample start, so the natural transition between notes is preserved in fast passages regardless of the Sample Start knob position.

Additional Features

  • MIDI Learn: Right-click any control to assign a MIDI CC. Supports continuous (linear 0–127) and toggle (on/off) mapping, with auto-detection of the mapping type and visual feedback during learn mode.
  • Presets: Factory presets plus unlimited user presets. Full plugin state is saved per preset, with modified-state detection.
  • Transpose & Range Expansion: Transpose from -24 to +24 semitones to extend the playable range beyond the sampled notes. Adjustable low and high boundaries define the active range. Fluid Flutes ships with this extension already configured — the sampled range is C3–C8, and out of the box the instrument plays down to G2, which sits naturally against the sampled notes. The built-in keyboard colour-codes keys: sampled notes appear bright, transposed (extended) notes appear in a distinct colour, so you always know which notes are native and which are pitch-shifted.
  • Built-in Keyboard: Full 88-key keyboard (A0–C8) with velocity sensitivity, playable range indication and keyswitch highlighting.
